Welcome to your nightmare America. You deserve this.
Welcome to your nightmare America. You deserve this.
Yesterday America voted. It voted against imperialism, against warmongering, against cronyism and corruption and state mandated monopolies. It voted against oligarchy and the notion that it should maintain one law for the governors and another for the governed. It voted against Clinton and that family’s brand of statist domination of every nuance and facet of American life.
Unfortunately, it also in many cases voted for, racism, sexism, theocracy, division and ignorance. Everywhere today, from talk shows to the halls of power, from workplace break rooms to dusty bars, people are talking. They are asking one overwhelming question: who do I blame for this.
Blame yourself America. It is your fault.
If you are a Democrat blame yourself for allowing a Clinton to rise yet again to the height of your party. Blame yourself for abandoning the progressive ideals you claim to so love and embracing a wall street loving elitist with a history of skirting rules and shirking duty. Blame yourself for being so in love with the narrative of your own superiority that you thought anyone who disagreed with you was “a bunch of deplorables”. Next time try listening to your neighbors instead of condemning them.
If you are a Republican blame yourself for letting your own elites turn you against yourselves. Blame yourself for looking to a fictitious “Great” past and not seeing the horrible problems and injustices that have dogged America since its birth. Blame yourself for being deceived by hate and your desire to feel the thrill of “winning” again, no matter the cost.
Most of all both parties should blame themselves for not standing up during their own primaries and saying “Is this REALLY the best we can do????”
If you are a libertarian blame yourself not for “stealing” votes from one party or the other, but for not stealing more of them. In an election with two of the most reviled candidates in history you failed yet again to crack 5%. While there are many of you no doubt pleased with the victories in CA, NV and MA, you should still feel like you lost. When handed the best chance in a generation to give America something better, all you could serve up is legal weed and snark laden memes.
There are many more people and groups who can be blamed, but the time for that is over. America made a grave mistake last night, and should in no way be consoled by the fact that it didn’t make a different one. It’s time we stopped blaming each other and looked to ourselves for responsibility.
Progressives need to decide what progress really means and who it is intended to benefit. If anyone can be said to have “won” this election it is the poor, rural, uneducated white person. Not because life under Trump will dramatically, magically improve for them, it won’t. Instead they have managed, maybe for the last time, to show they still exist. To show they still matter. The left has been ignoring these populations for a generation, hoping they would die off and give way to the urban elite. This morning we see that failure spelled out in swaths of red across the election maps. If progressives really stand for progress it must embrace all Americans, not just the ones in urban zip codes.
Conservatives need to decide if their convictions are really worth the price. Is it worth embracing a loathsome, fear mongering demagogue just to stop the statist, globalist narrative? The racist right wing conservative decrying sharia law while holding his bible has become a trope. While it smacks of media elitism and laziness, did the conservatives really have to make this caricature so close to the truth? In opposing the left’s hypocritical love affair with Islam couldn’t they have found a way not to become what they’ve railed against? In the fight for secure borders and sane immigration polices, couldn’t they have avoided demonizing their own friends, neighbors and family? In demanding we stand up and respect our traditions of liberty, autonomy and self-determination, did they have marginalize and insult so many who are already clinging to existence on the fringes? Couldn’t they have found a way to oppose the destruction of American tradition without destroying America itself?
Lastly the Libertarians, who are probably the biggest disappointment in the whole election cycle, need to stand up. Not only to demand debate appearances but to show the world what Liberty really means and why it matters now more than ever. The human race is quickly growing obsolete. It becomes ever more difficult to argue for individual rights in a world where the individual is being devoured by automation. If liberty is to survive as a concept, let alone a reality, it needs to be championed by passionate, sane leaders who can differentiate it from bestial anarchy. Political parties should start with ideals and end with policy. It seems clear now the Libertarians have gotten that backwards. Show the world why freedom still matters and the policy will be easy to sell.
Yesterday America voted. Today it should stand before a mirror, look deep into its own heart and say “I expected better of you!” Tomorrow it should begin remembering what that means.
